Leachate Treatment Background

Full-scale Leachate Treatment Technology (SFAO3) by MOTIVA

Landfill leachate is generated during the decomposition of municipal solid waste in landfills, combined with rainwater infiltration and long-term exposure to surface and groundwater. It contains high concentrations of heavy metals, organics, COD, and ammonia nitrogen, making it highly polluting and difficult to treat.

Limitations of Traditional NF/RO Membrane Process

The widely used nanofiltration–reverse osmosis (NF/RO) membrane process (applied in over 99% of cases) only separates and transfers pollutants rather than degrading or removing them. This leads to:

  • High investment and operating costs
  • Membrane fouling and unstable system performance
  • Poor resistance to impact loading
  • Large volumes of concentrate, causing secondary pollution

SFAO3 Full-Scale Treatment Technology vs. Conventional NF/RO Membrane Method

The conventional NF/RO (Nanofiltration + Reverse Osmosis) dual-membrane process, used in over 99% of leachate treatment cases, primarily separates and transfers toxic substances without truly degrading them. While effective in initial containment, this approach suffers from high capital and operational costs, membrane fouling, poor shock resistance, and generates a large volume of concentrated brine, resulting in secondary pollution through toxin recirculation.

In contrast, MOTIVA’s SFAO3 Full-Scale Treatment Technology, based on MOTIVA Coupled Oxidation + Biological + Advanced Treatment, effectively degrades heavy metals and toxic organics, significantly improving biodegradability and treatment efficiency. This integrated solution achieves stable, compliant discharge without generating concentrated waste streams, offering a more sustainable and cost-effective alternative to membrane-based systems.

Advantages of the Full-Scale Treatment Process

  1. Lower Capital Investment: Saves over 30% in investment with 30–50% less land area required.
  2. Lower Operating Costs: Reduces OPEX by 20–50%.
  3. Automated Operation: Ensures stable effluent quality with minimal human intervention.
  4. No Concentrate Generation: Directly decomposes pollutants, eliminating salt and organics accumulation.
