Innovative Kitchen Wastewater Treatment Technology by MOTIVA

The massive generation of kitchen waste poses serious threats to our soil, water, and air. During the transportation and handling of food waste, a significant amount of kitchen wastewater is inevitably produced. This wastewater is rich in animal and vegetable oils, starch, juice, and other organics like proteins and amino acids.

If discharged untreated, these substances decompose rapidly, consuming dissolved oxygen in water bodies and leading to severe oxygen depletion. Under anaerobic conditions, suspended solids generate foul odors, spreading through the air and affecting nearby communities. Additionally, this nutrient-rich wastewater becomes a breeding ground for bacteria, viruses, and pests.

Characteristics of MOTIVA’s Kitchen Wastewater Treatment Process

MOTIVA’s Innovative Process Flow:

Raw Wastewater → SNW Solid-Liquid Separator → Grease Separation & Sediment Equipment → FCD Pretreatment Device → High-Efficiency Anaerobic → Anoxic/Oxic → SAO3 Advanced Oxidation → Discharge

This process builds upon traditional methods and incorporates several innovations, proven safe, effective, and stable.

Key Innovations in the Process

(1) High-efficiency solid-liquid separation:Kitchen wastewater from waste pressing contains high suspended solids. MOTIVA’s specialized SNW equipment removes most solids upfront, improving oil removal efficiency downstream.

(2) Efficient grease removal:After solids removal, MOTIVA’s high-performance grease separators extract oil from the water. The collected grease can be reused for biodiesel production.

(3) FCD Pretreatment Technology:Despite suspended solids and oil removal, the wastewater still contains high COD and ammonia. MOTIVA’s patented FCD device uses highly active materials to neutralize acids and break down large organic molecules. It enhances biodegradability, removes over 35% of COD, 30% of ammonia nitrogen, and 20% of total nitrogen. This reduces the load and footprint of the biological system while ensuring stable performance.

(4) SAO3 Advanced Oxidation:Post-biological treatment, MOTIVA applies ozone-based advanced oxidation. Using the patented SAO3-II catalyst, residual organics, color, and odors are eliminated, and pathogens are removed. Depending on client needs, treated water can meet either direct discharge or municipal sewer standards.

Advantages of MOTIVA’s Process

  • Efficient removal of suspended solids and grease using dedicated separation equipment.
  • Reuse of recovered grease for biodiesel refining.
  • Improved biodegradability through the patented FCD pretreatment, reducing biological treatment space requirements.
  • Advanced oxidation technology ensures compliant discharge, removes odors and color, and destroys pathogens.

Key Challenges in Kitchen Wastewater Treatment

Kitchen wastewater treatment presents several challenges, primarily due to its high content of grease and suspended solids, which require efficient separation and removal to prevent downstream issues. The wastewater also carries a high organic load, necessitating a robust and efficient biological treatment system to ensure stable performance. Additionally, kitchen waste is typically processed near its source, meaning available space for treatment facilities is often limited. Furthermore, the treatment process generates significant odors, making effective odor control essential to avoid negatively impacting surrounding residential or commercial environments.

MOTIVA vs. Traditional Treatment Process

  • MOTIVA Process:

Raw Wastewater → SNW Solid-Liquid Separation → Grease Separation → FCD Pretreatment → High-Efficiency Anaerobic → Anoxic/Oxic → SAO3 Advanced Oxidation → Discharge

This process offers greater stability and treatment effectiveness compared to conventional systems.

MOTIVA Treatment Process Traditional Process

  • Traditional Process:

Raw Wastewater → Emulsification & Oil Removal → Chemical Coagulation & Sedimentation → Anaerobic → Anoxic/Oxic → Disinfection → Discharge Zhejiang Kitchen Wastewater Treatment Project (40m3/d)

Shortcomings of Traditional Methods:

  1. Incomplete oil removal due to reliance on chemicals.
  2. Heavy chemical dosing, high sludge generation, and unstable pretreatment results.
  3. Low biodegradability improvement; inefficient biological treatment.
  4. Large footprint due to low efficiency.
  5. No deep treatment stage; final effluent often fails to meet high standards, especially in color and odor.
